Specialist psychotherapy for expatriates
Expert mental health support for professionals living overseas.
My name is Corene Crossin, and I am a registered psychotherapist based in Australia. I provide specialised therapy and counselling support for expatriates and their families.
At Expatriate Therapy, I offer a range of specialised services designed to address the unique psychological challenges of living abroad. Whether you're preparing for an international move, struggling with cultural adjustment, navigating relationship challenges abroad, or preparing to return home, my services provide targeted support for your specific situation.
All services are delivered through secure online sessions, accessible from anywhere in the world, with flexible scheduling across multiple time zones.
My aim is to help you adjust and thrive while living abroad.
As a former expat and senior executive, I know first-hand the challenges of living and working abroad. With advanced professional training in psychology and counselling, and decades of personal experience of cross-cultural transitions, I founded Expatriate Therapy to provide accessible, tailored psychological support to global professionals and their loved ones to work through challenges and thrive while living overseas.
My approach combines evidence-based therapeutic techniques with cultural sensitivity and practical strategies tailored to the expatriate experience. I believe that with the right support, the expatriate journey can be not just manageable, but transformative and enriching.
My approach
-
Evidence-Based Therapy
I offer a warm, compassionate presence to help you work through challenges. My practice draws from proven therapeutic approaches including Internal Family Systems and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions. These methods are adapted specifically for expatriate challenges and transitions.
-
Systemic Perspective
I understand that expatriate life affects your entire family system. Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, I consider the broader relational context and help you develop strategies that support the wellbeing of everyone in your circle during international transitions.
-
Practical Support
Beyond traditional therapy, I provide practical tools and strategies specifically designed for unique mental health challenges faced abroad. My goal is to help you develop concrete skills for cultural adaptation, maintaining relationships across distances, and building resilience in changing environments.
FAQs
How does online therapy work?
Online therapy sessions are conducted through the Zoom secure video platform. You'll receive a private link to join your session at the scheduled time. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space where you can speak freely.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Research consistently shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for most mental health concerns. For expatriates, online therapy offers the added benefits of continuity across moves, access to specialised expertise regardless of location, and the comfort of receiving support from your own space.
What if I am in a different location?
I offer flexible scheduling across multiple time zones to accommodate clients worldwide. When booking your appointment, you'll see available times in your local time zone, making it easy to find a convenient slot regardless of where you're located.
How is expatriate therapy different from regular therapy or counselling?
Expatriate therapy specifically addresses the unique psychological challenges of living abroad, including cultural adjustment, identity shifts, third culture kid experiences, and transition stress. As a specialist in this area, I bring both professional expertise and first hand experience as a former expat to help you navigate these specific challenges, rather than applying general therapeutic approaches that may not address the expatriate context.
Do I need a mental health care plan or doctor’s referral to book an appointment?
You don’t need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment with me.
If you are Australian, note that Australian Mental Health Care Plans fund sessions with Australian psychologists and social workers. As a registered psychotherapist, my sessions are not covered by Mental Health Care plans or Medicare payments. This means you do not need a referral from you GP to work with me, and there is no “gap” fee.
Are your services covered by health insurance?
Health insurance policies vary, and some may cover psychotherapy. I recommend checking with your insurance provider to find out what cover you have.
What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel?
I understand that life happens, and you may reschedule your appointment without charge within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment time. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a small fee.
